“Every second week, for four years, Debra Jowett took a group of 10 kids from the Tweddle Place Boys & Girls Club to the Millwoods Public Library,” says her best friend Aisling Symons. “She would read to them and they would do crafts, play games and tell stories all related to the books. She really wanted to instil her love of books in the kids she worked with.” Debra was a librarian at the Edmonton Catholic School Board until she started selling library related security equipment. Unfortunately, her new job involved a lot of travel which would mean cancelling some outings of the ‘Book Worm Club’ at the last minute. She didn’t want to disappoint the kids so she took a break from volunteering. She was planning on starting up again once things settled down at work but became ill before that happened. Debra passed away on February 3, 2010 at the age of 42. “Debra was committed to volunteering at the Club,” says Aisling. “She also loved camping, cats, travel, but most of all – books; she was addicted to books. And she knew how to share that passion, as most weeks there were more than 10 kids waiting to go with her to the library. She had to start a wait list, so those kids would have a chance to go next time.” “She was my best friend since we were little kids, and I miss her terribly,” Aisling goes on to say. “Providing a gift to Boys & Girls Club of Edmonton was one way of honouring her memory.” In 2004, Debra received the Volunteer of the Year Award from Boys & Girls Club of Edmonton. At that time, the staff wrote a book based on Dr.Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham. Click here to read this very special poem. |
